The short answer
Flat is the standard and the right default for almost everyone. Ripple bases are said to grip the puck surface and, by some accounts, reduce channeling - but those claims come from makers, retailers and owners rather than controlled testing we can point to. A level, consistent tamp, and good distribution before it, matter more than the shape of the base.

1. Choose flat or ripple

Breville's 54 mm baskets are tapered, so their tampers are sized at 53.3 mm. This is the V4 in that size with a flat 304 stainless base.
It has the same springs and leveling plate as the larger sizes.
Size matters more than base shape: a tamper that is too small leaves an untamped ring at the edge.

What matters more
- Level. An angled tamp is a common cause of channeling; a leveling plate removes it.
- Consistency. The same pressure every time, which a spring provides.
- Distribution. Channeling usually starts in clumps below the surface, which no base shape reaches - see distribution tool vs WDT.
- Size. A tamper matched to your basket leaves no untamped edge.
