The short answer
Buy a 54 mm WDT tool first, then a 53.3 mm calibrated tamper, then a 0.1 g scale with a timer. Add a 53.3 mm puck screen and a 54 mm bottomless portafilter once your prep is consistent. Skip 58 mm tools - they will not fit.

Normcore WDT Tool V4
Entry tier · A retractable needle tool for breaking up clumps in the basket before tamping.
Breaks up clumps before tamping - in the 54 mm size.
Ground coffee clumps, and clumps leave dense and loose areas in the basket that water routes around. Stirring with fine needles evens the bed.
The Normcore V4 has nine needles with 0.3 mm and 0.4 mm sets, in 54 mm and 58 mm sizes - buy the 54 mm.
Its needles retract with a twist, so it lives in a drawer without bending.
It is the cheapest meaningful improvement to an espresso shot, by some distance.
Specification
- Needles
- 9 needles; 0.3 mm and 0.4 mm sets included
- Material
- 304 stainless needles, anodized aluminum handle
- Mechanism
- Twist to extend or retract
- Sizes
- 54 mm and 58 mm
What it does well
- The cheapest meaningful improvement to an espresso shot, by some distance
- Retracting needles means it lives in a drawer without bending
- Two needle gauges cover fine and coarser grinds
Where it gives ground
- Adds a step to every single shot
- Needles will eventually bend whatever you do
- Does nothing at all for filter coffee
Skip it if
Skip it only if your grounds come out with no clumps at all, which is rare.

At 152 x 130 x 26 mm it is small enough for many drip trays - measure yours first.
It is rechargeable over USB-C, rated for up to 10 hours.
It is not waterproof - see scales for the Barista Express for the full comparison.

Skip it if
Skip it if you already own a 0.1 g scale with a timer.
6. Skip this - it will not fit
Normcore Coffee Distribution Tool
Entry tier · A depth-adjustable leveler that flattens the grounds before tamping.
A 58.5 mm tool that does not fit a 54 mm basket.
This is here because distribution tools are a common recommendation.
The Normcore distribution tool is 58.5 mm, made for standard 58 mm baskets, so it does not fit the Barista Express's 54 mm basket.
It also levels only the surface; it does not fix clumping underneath - that is the WDT tool's job.
Buy the WDT tool above instead.
Specification
- Size
- 58.5 mm, fits standard 58 mm baskets
- Depth
- Adjustable 4 mm to 12 mm
- Base
- Food-grade 304 stainless, two angled planes
- Handle
- Anodized aluminum
What it does well
- Levels the bed in two or three twists with no technique to learn
- Adjustable depth means it works with your dose, not a fixed one
- Fits essentially every 58 mm machine
Where it gives ground
- Levels the surface; it does not fix clumping underneath - that is the WDT tool job
- One more thing to clean
- Wrong depth setting makes it useless, and the failure is invisible
Skip it if
Skip it on a Barista Express - see distribution tool vs WDT.
Why prep tools matter on this machine
The Barista Express's built-in grinder has 16 settings, which is coarse resolution for espresso dialing. When you cannot fine-tune the grind much, good distribution and a consistent tamp carry more of the load.
