The short answer
Buy a 58 mm WDT tool first, then a calibrated 58 or 58.5 mm tamper, then a 58 mm bottomless portafilter to see what your shots are doing. Add a 58.5 mm puck screen for a cleaner group. Skip anything sized for Breville's 54 mm baskets.

1. Buy first
Normcore WDT Tool V4
Entry tier · A retractable needle tool for breaking up clumps in the basket before tamping.
Breaks up clumps before tamping - in the 58 mm size.
Ground coffee clumps, and clumps leave dense and loose areas in the basket that water routes around. Stirring with fine needles evens the bed.
The Normcore V4 has nine needles with 0.3 mm and 0.4 mm sets, in 54 mm and 58 mm sizes - buy the 58 mm.
Its needles retract with a twist, so it lives in a drawer without bending.
It is the cheapest meaningful improvement to an espresso shot, by some distance.
Specification
- Needles
- 9 needles; 0.3 mm and 0.4 mm sets included
- Material
- 304 stainless needles, anodized aluminum handle
- Mechanism
- Twist to extend or retract
- Sizes
- 54 mm and 58 mm
What it does well
- The cheapest meaningful improvement to an espresso shot, by some distance
- Retracting needles means it lives in a drawer without bending
- Two needle gauges cover fine and coarser grinds
Where it gives ground
- Adds a step to every single shot
- Needles will eventually bend whatever you do
- Does nothing at all for filter coffee
Skip it if
Skip it only if your grounds come out with no clumps at all, which is rare.
2. Buy second
Normcore Spring-Loaded Tamper V4
Mid tier · A calibrated tamper with interchangeable springs and a self-leveling plate.
A calibrated, self-leveling tamper in 58 or 58.5 mm.
The V4 comes in 58 mm and 58.5 mm for standard 58 mm baskets, with 15, 25 and 30 lb springs and a 304 stainless base in flat or ripple.
Its leveling plate rests on the basket rim so every tamp is square, removing tamp pressure and tamp angle as variables in one purchase.
The Silvia shows you every flaw in your prep, so removing variables pays off.
It is heavier and clunkier than a plain tamper.
Specification
- Sizes
- 51 mm, 53.3 mm, 58 mm, 58.5 mm
- Springs
- 15 lb, 25 lb and 30 lb included
- Base
- 304 stainless, flat or ripple
- Leveling
- Plate rests on the basket rim as you press
What it does well
- Removes tamp pressure and tamp angle as variables in one purchase
- Three springs let you find the pressure your machine likes
- Costs a fraction of the machines that automate the same thing
Where it gives ground
- Heavier and clunkier than a plain tamper
- The click can be mistaken for the end of the stroke
- You must buy the size that matches your basket exactly
Skip it if
Skip it if you already tamp level and consistently.
3. For diagnosis
Normcore 58 mm Bottomless Portafilter
Mid tier · A naked portafilter for 58 mm commercial-standard machines, with a basket included.
A 58 mm naked portafilter that lists Rancilio among its fits, with an 18 g basket.
Normcore's 58 mm bottomless portafilter lists Rancilio among the machines it fits, alongside E61 machines, Gaggia and others.
It comes with an 18 g basket, which is often the real upgrade.
It shows the extraction directly, which nothing else does - and will spray the counter until your prep improves.
Check your basket size: 58 mm and 58.5 mm baskets are not the same.
Specification
- Size
- 58 mm
- Fits
- E61 machines, Gaggia, Rancilio, Breville 58 mm, La Marzocco, Flair 58, Rocket
- Material
- 304 stainless steel; aluminum alloy or American walnut handle
- Basket
- 18 g included
What it does well
- 58 mm is the commercial standard, so it fits an unusually wide range of machines
- Comes with an 18 g basket, which is often the real upgrade
- Shows the extraction directly, which nothing else does
Where it gives ground
- Will spray the counter until your puck preparation improves
- Diagnostic rather than corrective - it shows problems, it does not fix them
- Check your machine's exact size: 58 mm and 58.5 mm baskets are not the same
Skip it if
Skip it until your prep is consistent - see bottomless portafilters.
4. For a cleaner group
Normcore Puck Screen 58.5 mm
Entry tier · A 1.7 mm stainless mesh disc that sits on top of the puck in a 58 mm basket.
A 1.7 mm, 316 stainless screen for standard 58 mm baskets.
The 58.5 mm screen fits standard 58 mm baskets: 1.7 mm thick, 316 stainless, with 150 micron mesh (100 microns on the titanium version).
A cleaner shower screen is the one benefit nobody disputes; Normcore also says it improves water distribution.
It takes headspace in the basket, so the dose may need to come down.
It does nothing about clumps inside the bed - that is the WDT tool's job.
Specification
- Diameter
- 58.5 mm, for standard 58 mm baskets
- Thickness
- 1.7 mm
- Mesh
- 150 microns (silver); 100 microns on the titanium PVD version
- Material
- 316 stainless steel
What it does well
- Keeps the shower screen noticeably cleaner, which is the one benefit nobody disputes
- Normcore says it improves water distribution and reduces channeling
- 316 stainless is made for daily contact with hot water and coffee
Where it gives ground
- 1.7 mm of screen takes headspace in the basket, so the dose may need to come down
- One more part to rinse after every shot
- It does nothing about clumps inside the bed - that is a WDT tool's job
Skip it if
Skip it until WDT and tamping are consistent - see are puck screens worth it.
5. Optional
Normcore Coffee Distribution Tool
Entry tier · A depth-adjustable leveler that flattens the grounds before tamping.
A depth-adjustable leveler that fits standard 58 mm baskets.
The distribution tool is 58.5 mm, fits standard 58 mm baskets, and adjusts from 4 mm to 12 mm deep on a 304 stainless base.
It levels the bed in two or three twists with no technique to learn.
It levels the surface only; it does not fix clumping underneath.
The wrong depth setting makes it useless, and the failure is invisible.
Specification
- Size
- 58.5 mm, fits standard 58 mm baskets
- Depth
- Adjustable 4 mm to 12 mm
- Base
- Food-grade 304 stainless, two angled planes
- Handle
- Anodized aluminum
What it does well
- Levels the bed in two or three twists with no technique to learn
- Adjustable depth means it works with your dose, not a fixed one
- Fits essentially every 58 mm machine
Where it gives ground
- Levels the surface; it does not fix clumping underneath - that is the WDT tool job
- One more thing to clean
- Wrong depth setting makes it useless, and the failure is invisible
Skip it if

6. Skip this - wrong size
Normcore 54 mm Bottomless Portafilter
Entry tier · A naked portafilter for 54 mm Breville machines, with a basket included.
A 54 mm Breville-fit portafilter that will not fit the Silvia's 58 mm group.
This is here because 54 mm and 58 mm listings sit side by side and are easy to confuse.
Normcore's 54 mm bottomless portafilter fits Breville 54 mm machines such as the Barista Express, Barista Pro, Infuser and Duo-Temp.
The Silvia uses a 58 mm commercial group, so buy the 58 mm version above.
The same applies to tampers and screens: 53.3 mm tools are for Breville baskets.
Specification
- Fits
- Breville 54 mm: Barista Express, Barista Pro, Infuser, Duo-Temp
- Material
- 304 stainless; anodized aluminum or walnut handle
- Basket
- 16-18 g included
What it does well
- Shows you exactly where the extraction is going wrong - nothing else does that
- Comes with a non-pressurized basket, which is the actual upgrade
- Fits the most common home machine platform in the US
Where it gives ground
- It will spray your kitchen while you learn
- Diagnoses problems; it does not fix them
- Useless without a grinder that can respond to what you see
Skip it if
Skip it on a Silvia - see are espresso tampers universal.
Why prep matters more on a Silvia
The Silvia has no PID as shipped and is unforgiving of a bad grinder - it will show you every flaw. Consistent distribution and tamping remove the variables you can control, which leaves temperature and grind as the ones to manage.
