The short answer

Buy the Infuser if you make several drinks in a session and want PID temperature control with a 1.8 L tank. Buy the Bambino Plus if you make one or two drinks quickly and want the milk handled for you. Both are 54 mm, both use low-pressure pre-infusion, and neither includes a grinder - so budget for one either way.

Speed against volume

The Bambino Plus's ThermoJet heater reaches brew temperature in three seconds. The Infuser's thermocoil takes meaningfully longer. If coffee happens in the gap between waking up and leaving, that gap is the whole comparison.

The Infuser answers with capacity: a 61 fl oz tank against a small one. Owners of the compact machines consistently name the tank as the daily irritation, and it is the one thing no firmware or technique fixes.

Milk: automatic or yours

The Bambino Plus's automatic texturing sets temperature and foam level and stops. It is genuinely good at producing a drinkable cappuccino with no practice.

The Infuser's wand is manual. It is harder, it is what latte art requires, and its auto-purge after steaming is the feature that makes back-to-back drinks repeatable.

Breville Infuser

1. If you pull several drinks

Breville Infuser

Mid tier · A grinder-less 54 mm machine with PID and a larger tank than the Bambino line.

PID-controlled thermocoil and a 61 oz tank, with a manual wand.

The Infuser is a 54 mm machine with a 1650 W thermocoil under electronic PID control and a removable, filtered 61 fl oz / 1.8 L tank.

That tank is roughly three times the working volume of the compact machines. If you make coffee for two people plus milk drinks on a Saturday, it is the difference between brewing and refilling.

PID holds brew temperature steady rather than letting a thermostat swing around the target, which is what makes yesterday's dialed-in shot behave the same today.

Auto-purge resets the thermocoil to brew temperature after steaming, so you are not flushing and guessing between a cappuccino and the next espresso.

It heats in seconds rather than the Bambino's three, and its wand is entirely manual - no automation of any kind.

What it does well

  • PID plus a big tank at a grinder-less price
  • Auto-purge resets brew temperature after steaming
  • Pairs well with a serious standalone grinder

Where it gives ground

  • Slower to heat than the ThermoJet machines
  • Older design; the Bambino line gets more attention
  • Manual steam wand only

Skip it if

Skip it if your coffee is one drink made in a hurry. The Bambino Plus is built for exactly that.

Breville Bambino Plus

2. If you want speed and easy milk

Breville Bambino Plus

Entry tier · The Bambino with automatic milk texturing added.

Three-second heat-up and automatic texturing in a 7.4-inch-wide body.

The Bambino Plus heats via ThermoJet in three seconds and textures milk automatically to a set temperature and foam level, using a 16 fl oz jug.

Three seconds is not a specification you appreciate on paper and is the one you notice every single morning.

Its 54 mm basket takes an 18 g dose, its 15 bar pump extracts at 9 bar, and low-pressure pre-infusion wets the puck before full pressure - the same extraction approach as the Infuser.

At 11.9 x 7.4 x 14.3 in it is narrow enough to leave room for a grinder on a normal counter.

Its tank is small, so refilling is frequent, and the auto wand gives a fixed texture rather than one you shape.

Pump

What it does well

  • Automatic milk texturing gets a usable microfoam without practice
  • Same three-second heat-up as the standard Bambino
  • Fits a narrow counter with a grinder beside it

Where it gives ground

  • You are paying for the milk automation, not better espresso
  • Still no grinder
  • Auto-steam removes the control an enthusiast eventually wants

Skip it if

Skip it if you make more than two drinks at a time, or if you want to learn milk by hand.

Cleanup and the parts you touch daily

The Bambino Plus's automatic wand purges itself and wipes clean, which is one fewer habit to build. The Infuser's manual wand needs wiping and a short purge after every jug, exactly like a commercial machine - if that is skipped, milk dries inside the tip and steam power drops.

The Infuser's auto-purge works on the other side of that equation: after steaming, it dumps the excess heat itself so the next shot starts at brew temperature. On machines without it you flush manually and guess how much.

Descaling applies to both, and on a thermocoil or ThermoJet machine it is not optional - scale narrows the water path and drops brew temperature quietly. See how to descale an espresso machine for intervals.

Tank access, which nobody checks before buying

The Infuser's 1.8 L tank is removable and filtered, so refilling is a lift-and-carry rather than a pour-in-place. The Bambino's smaller tank has to be topped up far more often, which is the compounding annoyance: a small tank in an awkward position is the reason a machine stops being used.

If the machine will live against a wall or under a cabinet, check which direction the tank comes out before you buy either one.

The grinder decides more than either machine

Both take non-pressurized baskets, which means the coffee bed creates the resistance and grind quality sets the ceiling. Pairing either with a blade grinder wastes the machine entirely.

Budget the pair together - see best grinders for Breville espresso machines and what an espresso machine actually costs to own.

Which one is yours

  • Weekday single drink: the Bambino Plus. Three seconds wins.
  • Weekend sessions for two or more: the Infuser, for the tank and auto-purge.
  • You want to learn latte art: the Infuser's manual wand.
  • Nobody wants to learn steaming: the Bambino Plus.
  • Narrowest possible footprint: the Bambino Plus at 7.4 in wide.

Questions people actually ask

Breville Infuser or Bambino Plus?

The Infuser for a 61 oz tank, PID temperature control and auto-purge after steaming. The Bambino Plus for three-second heat-up, automatic milk texturing and a narrower body. Neither includes a grinder.

Does the Bambino Plus have PID?

It uses ThermoJet heating with digital temperature control rather than the Infuser's PID-controlled thermocoil. In practice the Infuser is the more temperature-stable of the two across a long session.

How much bigger is the Infuser's water tank?

The Infuser holds 61 fl oz / 1.8 L, roughly three times the working volume of Breville's compact machines - the single biggest practical difference in daily use.

Which is better for milk drinks?

For easy, consistent milk with no practice, the Bambino Plus and its automatic texturing. For control and latte art, the Infuser's manual wand, helped by auto-purge resetting brew temperature after steaming.

Do I still need a grinder for either machine?

Yes. Both are grinder-less and take non-pressurized baskets, so grind quality sets the ceiling on every shot.
