A French press does make cold brew - coarse grounds, cold water, half a day in the fridge, then plunge. As a way to try the drink, it is free if they already own one.

Its screen is coarse and there is no lip seal, so fines get into the cup and keep extracting in the fridge. Smoothness is the point of cold brew, and this works against it.
